- Abstract
An essay is presented on the influence of social Darwinism in Charles Dickens's novel "Our Mutual Friend" and its relationship to Malthusian political economy which argued that population growth will result to resource scarcity . The novel has made references to animals of the early and mid-19th century natural history. The character Rogue Riderhood referred to Gaffer Hexam as a bird of prey or wulturs when he visited characters Wrayburn and Lightwood to implicate Hexam in the Harmon murder.
