- Abstract
The project "Artificial Beaches for Antofagasta" is part of the Bicentenary Program that is taken place in several cities aiming at improving their habitability standards by the year 2010. This project in Antofagasta seeks to recuperate the coastal border of the city through a series of interventions that tries to improve the accessibility of the inhabitants to the sea; to decontaminate various places of the coast, and to create a new coastal avenue. Due to its rocky nature, the coast of the city lacks of natural beaches, so the local authorities in charge of urban development started in 2000 with the idea of providing the city with three large artificial beaches. In order to achieve this task, the project included the construction of coastal defenses and the filling of some parts with sand, with interesting environmental benefits.
