- Abstract
The hepatitis C virus can infrequently cause disease outside of the liver, known generally as extra-hepatic manifestations. Two such extra-hepatic manifestations are mixed type 2 cryoglobulinaemia, which is an auto-immune condition, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, which is a malignancy of the lymph system. In 1994, two studies first concluded that cellular changes in the lymphatic system caused by hepatitis C could lead to the development of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. This article provides a brief explanation of these other conditions and presents the evidence that supports the connections between hepatitis C, mixed type 2 cryoglobulinaemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. A case study then illustrates the complex interplay between hepatitis C and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and how treatments for both conditions affect one another.
