- Abstract
The article looks at the surveillance of the weight of North Americans during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Male physical education teachers are also discussed for the pressure placed on them to help develop students who are physically fit. The scientific principles applied to measuring and evaluating physical fitness are reviewed. The work of Charles Harold McCloy in researching body size, weight, and shape is discussed. Social concepts of what defines a person as overweight are considered.
