- Abstract
Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have developed a new type of carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) that addresses challenges such as weak interfacial adhesion and poor recyclability. The researchers incorporated a covalent adaptive network (CAN) into the polymer matrix, which mimics natural composite materials found in marine mollusks. The CANs contain dynamic covalent bonds that can rearrange the network structures, improving the bonding between the fiber and polymer. The CFRP can also be recycled without losing mechanical properties, making it a promising material for various applications.
