- Title
History, Reform, and Continuity in the Hymns of the Roman Breviary.
- Authors
Andersen, Eric M.
- Abstract
The article discusses the history, reform, and continuity of hymnody of the Roman breviary. It is the author's view that hymns are not proper to the mass and should be integral to the divine office or liturgy of the hours. Hymns have been used as a means of catechesis and theological formation. Traditions portray the role of hymnody as the response of men to the word of God. History has shown that hymnody is integral to the praying of the hours. The author calls for continued development of sacred hymnody by studying and singing of ancient Latin hymns.
