The article looks at the life and music of 18th-century German liturgical cantata composer Christoph Graupner (1683-1760). Topics covered include the effectiveness of Actor-Network Theory for elucidating the relationship between composers, patrons, and their environment, an assessment of the narrative of German composer Johann Sebastian Bach as the culmination of an era and its obscuring effects, and the value of Graupner's music by the second decade of the 19th century.
