- Authors

- Abstract
The article discusses archaeological excavations carried out at the South Flats Earthwork (20MU2) along the Muskegon River in Michigan. Particular focus is given to the construction and condition of the earthwork itself in comparison with other earthworks throughout Michigan and the Midwestern U.S. Emphasis is also given to the previous work of archaeologist George Irving Quimby at the site. The authors conclude that constructing a model for Michigan's earthworks is likely not possible due to their unique nature from site to site, but do propose that South Flats could have been used for Native American ceremonial purposes or tribal meetings. Other topics discussed include food utilization, animal remains, radiocarbon dating, and potsherd analysis.
