- Abstract
The article discusses the cotton trade in East Texas during the U.S. Civil War, especially the actions of the Cotton Bureau of the Trans-Mississippi Department of the Confederate Army. The government sale of cotton to pay for imported Confederate supplies is discussed, as is the requirement that Texas cotton planters sell half their crop to the government for this purpose, or have all their cotton impressed. Other topics discussed include the economic impact of the Union naval blockade, and the sale of cotton across the Rio Grande.
