D'une guerre à l'autre, d'un vers à l'autre, d'Allard à Aragon.

Steele, Stephen
- Abstract
An intertextual relationship may seem unlikely between two bodies of war poetry whose authors are as divided as Roger Allard and Aragon. Allard's vociferous opposition to many avant-garde movements and their claims to begin anew includes a series of remarks aimed at Aragon and his work in the aftermath of World War One. Allard restates his hostility toward Aragon during the Occupation and sides openly with Pétain according to witness accounts. For his part, Aragon delights in what he perceives as Allard's shortcomings as a poet of the aviation age before dismissing his writings altogether in 1924 as the 'drivel' of a retrograde critic. A few lines from their poems that express the unity of combatants of all stripes, Aragon's 'La rose et le réséda' (1942) and Allard's 'Adieux à l'infanterie' (1916-1917), share in the same formulation to warrant a closer look at what is involved in this proximity.
