- Abstract
The author offers opinions on the use of bisphophonates in the treatment of stress fractures. Bisphophonates have been used to treat osteroporosis because the substances increase bone mass and the powerful drug is used to treat a number of bone diseases. Although research indicates the drug may be effective in helping the healing process for stress fractures, the author notes research has also found significant side effects in some patients. Therefore, the author argues, bisphophonates should only be used in the treatment of bone diseases, rather than to treat otherwise healthy patients suffering stress fractures, despite the lengthy natural healing process.
