- Abstract
In this article, the concepts of khawf (anxiety) and reja' (hope), which are frequently referred in the Qur'an, are examined. Our aim is to present a semantic analysis of these concepts and to determine which meaning frame these concepts have in the divine book. In the Qur'an, the term khawf is mostly referred to anxiety/worry. In the Holy Qur'an, the concept of havf has certain aspects in association with the concepts of khashyet, ru'b, rahbe, rav', ishfaq, feza', heybet, vecs, vecel and vikâye. If fears is permanently experienced in religious matters, this is defined a state of anxiety, which could provide useful aspects for a believer. However, the Qur'anic point of view is that the state of anxiety, as a constant state of mind, should be experienced without turning into feelings such as fear, sadness and depression (ḍayq). The concept of reja', which is frequently mentioned in the Qur'an, does not refer to a passive state of mind, but it signals to a well-deserved feeling that gains meaning after consciousness and fulfillment of certain requirements. In the Holy Qur'an, emel ve tama' are concepts associated with reja'. In this direction, our study reveals the semantic analysis of the concepts of khawf and reja' and examines the contexts in which these concepts are covered in the Qur'an.
