- Abstract
The article discusses the book "Lauter gute Leute - Das Ehrenamt in den sozialen Diensten zwischen Legitimationsnutzen und Transaktionskostenregulierung" by Stefanie Lünsmann-Schmidt. The book examines the integration of volunteers in organizations that provide social services and whether the costs of supporting volunteers burden the organizations as much or even more than the savings compared to employing full-time staff. The author notes that volunteer work in social services has gradually declined and discusses the complex interaction of various actors in civil society. It is emphasized that state organizations have only been able to compete to a limited extent with church welfare associations and the Workers' Welfare Association. The author argues that civic engagement is important for making society capable and resilient in times of crisis, but emphasizes the importance of legitimacy and quality of service.
