- Abstract
Introduction: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory bowel process. Its two varieties are ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). The aim of the treatment is clinical and endoscopic remission. The quality of life in these patients is often forgotten. However, it must be taken into account that this influences the management and evolution of the disease. Aim: To determine the quality of life and related factors in patients with IBD treated in three social security hospitals in Ecuador. Methodology: observational, descriptive and crosssectional study in patients older than 18 years old, with a diagnosis of IBD, who are treated in the gastroenterology service ofthree social security hospitals: Carlos Andrade Marín, José Carrasco Arteaga, and Teodoro Maldonado Carbo; between January and June 2018. Results: Fifty patients were evaluated, 68 % (n = 34) with UC and 32 % (n = 16) with CD. The average age was 48 +/- 9 for CU and 42 +/- 7 in EC. The male - female ratio was 1.6-1. 30% of the patients evaluated (n = 15), perceived the quality of life as low. Statistically significant differences were found in relation to the type of IBD, EC (p: 0.03), sex (p: 0.04) and presence of relapses (p: 0.04). Conclusions: The quality of life was lower in female patients, patients diagnosed with CD, and patients with one or more episodes of an IBD relapse in the last six months.
