- Abstract
This article asserts that paramilitary police reformers like former U.S. congressman and Confederate general Winfield Scott Featherston constituted an important class of New South thinkers and state builders. Topics discussed include the intellectual history of southern paramilitarism between 1877 and World War I, the political and ideological center that emerged from Mississippi's white ruling class after Reconstruction, and mob violence in Mississippi.
