- Abstract
Introduction: in Bulgaria there are no systems in place for reporting and registration of adverse events occurring in a healthcare facility. The presence of medical errors is an indicator of the level of quality in healthcare that requires attention to be focused not only on the medical error per se, but also on making improvements in all aspects of medical care. Aim and objectives: the aim of this work is to explore the position of health service users on the magnitude of the problem related to errors in the medical-diagnostic process/medical errors in the context of violation of patient rights in general, by reviewing the problem of defining the concepts related to errors committed in the course of the medical-diagnostic process. Results: Nearly 70% of respondents answered that they had experienced a problem as a patient in the context of violated rights, with over 63% of respondents in our survey claiming to have been a victim of a diagnostic error, improper treatment or medical error, either personally or by members of their immediate environment. Discussion and conclusion: The lack of a legal definition of medical malpractice, as well as of rules for good medical practice, neither facilitates patients in claiming their rights, nor is it in the interest of the medical profession.
