- Abstract
Since the beginning of the last century, intellectuals and social scientists have been concerned about the content of news-media. The selection process of news topics and the whole content of news items of the early newspapers were supposed to have a certain influence over their readers. One hundred years later we still are curious about the eventual effect that news media has over audiences no matter newspaper, radio, television or web television, podcast, online or social media. Experienced researchers and even young ones or graduate students are still intrigued by the content that all this media produces from one side and the eventual effects this content might have over its consumers, at the other. Many of them wish to scrutinize that content in order to understand certain elements that help make more sense about the eventual effects over conventional or virtual audiences. The content analysis research method is one of the oldest media and communication research methods, still able to inquire original research problems. The goal of this paper is to provide a history of the method's development and to provide concrete evidence of its large application in marriage with other research methods in order to produce valid and reliable research conclusions even for complicated and sensitive research problems. This is done through a concrete application into a research topic of local interest.
