- Abstract
Introduction: Healthcare systems are facing increasingly competition in the contemporary world. In order to achieve sustainable competitive advantage, health organizations need a commitment to excellence and a means of measuring that commitment and its results. Benchmarking provides one approach for doing this in the condition of globalization. In the healthcare industry benchmarking improve significantly the efficiency, cost-effectiveness ratio, and quality of healthcare services. The aim of the study is to improve the model of work in the Patient Program for Psoriasis Patients-BioAssist (PPPP) by using a benchmarking method. Materials and Methods: A mixed-method approach for comparative analysis between the Center for Skin and Venereal Diseases-Sliven (CSVD) and PPPP-BioAssist was carried out. A documentary method, a direct observation and a direct individual survey through a structured questionnaire were used. The outcome measures were patients' compliance and long-term diseases remission. The etalon organization was selected on the basis of index for a good compliance - I = E/O, where E is the number of patients remaining in biological therapy with long-term clinical remission, and O - the total number of dispensary patients with psoriasis. Results: The organization-etalon was selected on the basis of Index I=92%, with a minimum threshold of 80.0%. The relative share of the patients with PPPPP-BioAssist who dropped out of biological treatment decreased by 16.0% and the percentage of those who achieved long-term clinical remission increased by 9.0%. Conclusions: After introducing the benchmarking in PPPP-BioAssist, the quality of work with patients with psoriasis has improved, as well as their compliance.
