- Abstract
The article explores the social practice of veiling in Islam and the headscarf debate arising from such practice in the Western societies. It examines the symbolic meaning of the veil in Islamic faith and the tradition of veil as an epistemological symbol in the Western history and culture of thought. It also looks into the cultural representations and social perceptions of veiling in the contemporary Western arts and literature.
