- Abstract
Child and youth victimization is a universal phenomenon, common to all the different social groups, regardless of their condition (UNICEF [59]). In other words, it is the total exposure to different types of victimization (coded 0 = no victimization; 1 = one type of victimization; 2 = two kinds of victimization, etc.). The bivariate analyses between demographic and victimization variables show that age and city size were consistently associated with lifetime victimization prevalence with increasing prevalence of victimization among older children and those living in larger cities. Having at least two caregivers is a nonsignificant variable for being victim of assault, for serious forms of victimization, as a whole, and for being victim of different forms of offenses, and it is associated in a highly significant way with victimization prevalence, minor victimization, and all other types of victimization. Regarding parents' immigrant status, the mother's status is associated with victimization prevalence, diversity and serious victimization, while the father's immigrant status is only highly significantly associated with the diversity of forms of victimization suffered by the youth.
