The article presents an overview of the theoretical aspects of barriers to learning and research, which the author refers to as troublesome knowledge. A discussion of the ways that learning barriers impact teaching and learning issues commonly experienced by health information professionals is presented. The ways that an understanding of learning barriers can help those involved in teaching and learning activities to take a different approach to teaching, and to better understand the learning experience, are discussed
