- Title
An "Evil Genius": The Construction of the Publisher in the Postrevolutionary Social Imaginary.
- Authors
Haynes, Christine
- Abstract
An essay is presented regarding the construction and role of éditeur, or publisher, in the French Social Imaginary after the revolution. It also examines an 1835 essay "Les éditeurs" published at the literary magazine "Revue de Paris." The importance of épicier, or grocer as a symbol of petty bourgeois in the social imaginary has been recognized. The history of the publisher as a social type was discussed as well as the equivocal representation of the social imaginary of the early-nineteenth century.
