- Abstract
Toxoplasmosis is a protozoonosis whose etiologic agent is Toxoplasma gondii. Among the forms of infection occurring in humans the congenital, has severe clinical manifestations in infants. The purpose of this study was to conduct a serological screening and to identify the risk factors associated with transmission of Toxoplasma gondii in pregnant women attending the maternity hospital "Dr José María Vargas" in the city Valencia Carabobo state, during the period of April-August 2012 in order to estimate the prevalence of the parasite. Antibodies - Toxoplasma gondii IgG were determined by immunoenzymatic assay and they were detected in 36.9% (45) of women tested (122). The observed prevalence was low compared with other studies done in Venezuela and other countries. Furthermore, no statistically significant association was found between this parameter and the risk factors studied.
