- Abstract
When hate speech studies in Turkey and in the world are examined, it can be said that hate speech in the society is measured mostly with studies conducted on social media, and there are very few studies on hate speech in political communication, especially for political party leaders. This study aims to reveal whether nationalist political parties in Turkey use hate speech regarding Syrians under temporary protection, whose number is around 3.5 million according to official figures. It can be said that with the migration of Syrians to Turkey since 2011, the demographic structure has deteriorated in many cities and various social problems have arisen. However, hate speech has the potential to reveal “hate crimes” that can cause deeper wounds in society. In this study, which is important in this context, the statements of Devlet Bahçeli, Meral Akşener and Ümit Özdağ were examined with the method of document analysis. As a result of these examinations, although there are no prejudiced statements and discriminatory elements in the discourses of the Nationalist Movement Party leader Bahçeli regarding the Syrians under temporary protection, he approached the Syrians under temporary protection in a friendly way; It seems that the leader of the Good Party, Akşener, also stays away from discrimination, marginalization or prejudiced rhetoric. On the other hand, it is seen that the leader of the Victory Party, Özdağ, associates almost all the negativities that occur in the society with the Syrians under temporary protection and almost always uses discriminatory and marginalizing discourses.
