The article scrutinizes ironic descriptions of patriarchal masculinity in Goldsmith's "The Vicar of Wakefield" as exemplified by the character of Dr. Primrose. Alleged repressed gay desires, ambivalent heterosexuality, and reproductive prowess as social currency are explored along with Primrose's concerns of social feminization.
