- Abstract
Contributions of the philosopher of science Stephen Toulmin to the field of science education are presented. The paper focuses on three issues that from our point of view are central part of the work of this philosopher and analyses them in relation to their implications for teaching and learning of science. The first case refers to scientific explanations and their relations, both as models and concepts with questions and problems they seek to answer, the second concerns the role of rationability in the dynamics of scientific disciplines, and the third has to do with the concept of scientific enculturation, as a node that articulates the above questions in a proposal that calls for training in science from a humanistic perspective, critical and purposeful, which is inherent in the construction of intellectual flexibility; a proposal under investigation and from which we propose some extensions to the teaching of science.
