- Abstract
Unexplained, recurrent obsessive shopping has led to the phenomenon of compulsive buying. Compulsive buying is an uncontrolled, unstoppable shopping impulse. It is known that individuals with bipolar disorder are also compulsive buyers and shop more impulsively. These individuals shop excessively during depressive periods and thus feel better. In this study conducted on individuals with bipolar disorder, it is aimed to reveal the effect of uncontrolled use of credit card and advertisements on compulsive buying behavior, which are among the external factors that trigger compulsive buying behavior, and the effect of behavior on post-purchase regret. In this study, a face-to-face questionnaire survey was applied to 160 patients who volunteered for the study among the patients diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder who were followed up in the Mental Health and Diseases Outpatient Clinic of a hospital in Adana province. Multiple regression and simple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data. According to the results of the study; it was revealed that extrinsic triggers were related to compulsive buying behavior and behavior was related to emotional state after shopping. It has been determined that people diagnosed with bipolar disorder engage in compulsive consumption, and that this consumption is particularly affected by irrational use of credit cards and advertisements. It was also observed that bipolar individuals who compulsively consume feel sadness and regret about their shopping.
