- Title
Harry Potter and the Metaphysics of Soul-Splitting.
- Authors
Bassham, Gregory
- Abstract
In this article, the author describes how the world of author J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter book series is a magical one in which souls can be split into pieces and fragments of souls can magically be embedded in objects known as "Horcruxes." Horcruxes are said to make one immortal as long as one or more of those soul-fragments survives. Soul-splitting is said to create deep and probably insuperable problems for personal identity. It strongly suggests a dualist conception of mind and body, where mind is distinct from, and irreducible to, the body.
