- Abstract
Proper sterilization of instruments and materials is a critical aspect of infection control in hospitals. Biological monitoring is the preferred, as well as the only method that actually measures sterilization effectiveness. This study was under taken to evaluate the effectiveness of steamsterilizer and to identify factors contributing to sterilization failure in 6 Kashan governmental hospitalsin Iran. A totalof 312 biological indicator testswere performed as weekly during the one year period study (2011). Also, a questionnaire is designed to determine the knowledge of sterilizer operator regarding to sterilization process. The results demonstrated an overall sterilization failure rate (positive test) of 2.9 percent. Fifty percent of sterilizer operators have good knowledge regarding to sterilization process. Statistically, we were found a correlation between sterilization performance and age of sterilizer, interval between regular services and the level of operator knowledge. It is concluded that although over 97% of the sterilizer in Kashan governmental hospital do function well but improvement on the quality control of sterilization process is feasible and necessary.
