- Abstract
We study the optical absorption spectra for pure Bi12SiO20 single crystals and the crystals doped with Cr and Mn ions. These spectra are measured in the photon-energy region 1.3-2.6 eV at the temperatures 300-670 K. The intrinsic defects with significantly different optical and thermal activation energies (respectively 1.493 and 0.66 eV) are revealed in Bi12SiO20. The strengths S of electron-phonon interactions at the intra-centre transitions in Cr and Mn ions are determined. We obtain S ≈ 3.33 (at 300 K) and 3.42 (at 420 K) for Bi12SiO20:Cr, as well as S ≈ 5.26 (at 300 K) and 5.46 (at 420 K) for Bi12SiO20:Mn. A significant thermochromic effect is detected in Bi12SiO20:Cr crystals.
