- Abstract
The article discusses the role of Jewish characters in the book "A Son at the Front" by Edith Wharton and the book "The Professor's House," by Willa Cather. According to the author, in both works the Jewish character is presented in anti-Semitic stereotype as the antithesis of the self-sacrifice required of World War I soldiers. Cather's ambivalence about this sacrifice, however, makes for a more nuanced and sympathetic response to her Jewish character. A brief history of rhetoric against Jews in the U.S. is presented.
