- Abstract
Various studies have indicated that exercise is related to several psychological variables in females. The purpose of this study was to study the relationships that are established between exercise and some of these variables (anxiety, depression, and self-concept) in adolescent females from Murcia, Spain, and to observe how these variables are influenced by the type of physical activity that they participate in, the intensity, the frequency, and their satisfaction with this exercise. The sample was composed of 226 16-19 year-old female students from secondary schools in Murcia. The results indicated that the group of girls that took part in some form of physical activity had higher scores in all factors of self-concept, except emotional. Further, those that participated in physical activity with greater frequency had lower levels of anxiety and depression. On the other hand, the girls that practiced low-intensity activities had higher levels of anxiety. Finally, the group that enjoyed their exercise participation had lower levels of anxiety than the group that did not especially enjoy exercise. These results are discussed and future research proposals are given.
