- Abstract
categorizing invasive mammals and management actions. Invasive alien species (IAS) are the second leading cause of global biodiversity loss, as they affect native species and the structure and functioning of ecosystems. In Argentina, a significant number of IAS has been recorded, with mammals being one of the most problematic invasive groups, causing environmental damage and considerable economic losses. Twentyseven species of exotic mammals were identified as invasive and categorized according to their risk level and impact, suggesting alternatives for the conservation of biodiversity and productivity of the affected ecosystems. The absence or weakness of relevant legislation and control agencies are the main factors that hinder management actions for almost all IAS in Argentina. Therefore, we suggest the application of scientific evidence and knowledge as an effective source of information for prevention, control, eradication or mitigation of invasive species, as well as other lines of action to promote biodiversity conservation and to encourage the development of skills and scientific research on IAS. I specifically consider including social perception as a necessary concept to address the problem.
