- Title
A Light in the Darkness: U.S. Mine Lamps, the Early Years--Candlesticks, Oil Lamps, and Safety Lamps.
- Authors
Bartos, Paul J.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the history of the use and development of lighting used in underground mining operations in the U.S. from 1800 to 2000. The lamps considered include covered oil lamps, safety lamps, spout wick oil lamps, candlesticks, carbide lamps, and electric cap lamps. The author considers reasons why obsolete forms of lighting were continuously used after the introduction of superior new lighting technologies. The use of specialty lighting and mine safety in methane producing coal mines is discussed.
