- Title
The Dreams and Downfall of Giacomo Cappellin.
- Authors
Lockwood, Howard J.
- Abstract
Giacomo Cappellin formed a partnership with Paolo Venini in 1921, a partnership that would last four years. The actual severing of the partnership occurred during their greatest triumph: the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris. After the split, Giacomo Cappellin started M.V.M. Cappellin, a company that, until its bankruptcy in 1932, was to produce some of the most creative, modern glass of the time and among the most sought-after glass today. Using the Bankruptcy Papers of the Italian court as a basis for the M.V.M. Cappellin’s financial history, the author traces the company’s history from its optimistic first year to the final death knell. Weaving the financial history in with the general history of the company, the author focuses on several causes for the bankruptcy, including Cappellin’s personality, management issues, the extensive exhibition schedule, the unprofitable production of stained-glass windows, and the extravagant renovation of the Palazzo da Mula.
