- Abstract
Automation is one of the main products of technological advances arising after the Second World War and has been widely used by industry, mainly in mass production, aiming to increase technical and allocative efficiency, improve quality, reduce dependence specialized labor, among others. However, the low and medium volume customized goods industry, positioned towards the extremes of the product-process matrix of Hayes and Wheelwright (1979), has been adopting automation to increase its competitiveness against the competition. This article aims to analyze the methodology used to adapt projects and production of furniture industries that had seek in automation a way to grow and increase their production. Changes in design concepts, physical organization of manufacturing and production measurement systems adopted against this new strategy will be evaluated. An upholstered furniture large manufacturer located in Rio Grande do Sul, active in the national market, with one manufacturing unit and twenty product lines will be studied. In the case study, five measures were perceived, treated in stages, towards the automation of the production process: selection of raw materials, evaluation of product design using market information (customers, distributors and partners), selection and adoption of technologies, implementation of project methodology and, finally, adequacy of the production process. Upon completion of all stages, these measures had translated into a growth pattern that promotes internal changes quickly and efficiently. Finally, this study contributes to the presentation of the steps used by the company towards the change of position in the product-process matrix proposed by Hayes and Wheelwright.
