- Abstract
The article discusses Rabbinical leadership in Ottoman Jewish communities. It states communal leadership in Ottoman communities, and especially the roles of rabbis and lay leaders, prior to the nineteenth century, and mentions factors associated with Jews' commitments to their community's institutions, such as ability of rabbis to enforce a communal culture that placed Jewish law, and communal institutions. It notes the consensus about the role of religious law.
