- Abstract
Anxiety and depression are prevalent among people with epilepsy. Some patients may have seizures associated with or precipitated by anxiety. Group psycho- education for persons with epilepsy along with their family members, and pranayama - meditation have been practiced in the Sree Chitra Thirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India for the past many years. This study was done in the Out-Patient Division of the Institute under Department of Neurology. This study attempts to evaluate the efficacy of Group psychoeducation and meditation programs in reducing state and trait anxiety and total anxiety following an experimental research design. To find out the impact of these two programs among persons with epilepsy, 36 persons with epilepsy were randomized into three equal groups viz., Psycho-Education (PE), Meditation (M) and Control (C) group receiving no intervention. Patients in each group received regular counselling in relation to epilepsy management and appropriate medications. The State-Trait Anxiety Scale(Spielberger) was administered to patients in all three groups prior to interventions, at three months and six months after interventions. Statistical calculations after six months showed significant reduction in scores for trait anxiety and total anxiety in psycho-education and meditation groups. It also showed significant reduction of state anxiety in psycho-education group. Where as no significant reduction in scores was observed among control group patients. The group psycho-education and pranayama- meditation methods were found effective in reducing state-trait anxiety among persons with epilepsy.
