- Abstract
The article discusses a case of mitochondrial myopathy in a 35-year-old man who experienced massive hyperventilation after strenuous work. Because of the uncharacteristic presentation of mitochondrial diseases and their bewildering diversity, the man was at first thought to be suffering from a functional disorder. The disease was correctly identified only when a massive metabolic acidosis was detected and an abnormality of oxidative phosphorylation taken into account.
