- Abstract
Dr. David Velasco Yáñez, sj. Zapatista Women and Gender Struggles. Part IV: Encounter of the Zapatista Peoples with the Peoples of the World. "Commandant Ramona and the Zapatistas". Chapter A. From Submission to Autonomy. Have Zapatista women made any contribution to gender struggles? From the fact of having shared the same suffering, made more acute by its triple dose of domination—due to their condition as women, Indian and poor—Zapatista women bear witness to the experience that the Insurgent Sub-commandant Marcos referred to in the title of one of his first statements in 1994: "The Long Crossing from Suffering to Hope". The testimonies of Zapatista women reveal the process, as it is lived, leading to fairer relationships between men and women: difficulties for women, but also for men. We will examine the interventions of Zapatista women from the five "caracoles" (good-government commissions).
