- Abstract
Chromosome studies and observations were made on Phytolacca dioica, P. tetramera and P. bogotensis. The chromosome number of the first species is confirmed, the last two are reported for the first time. P. dioica is a tetraploid (2n = 36) with very small somatic chromosomes (0.5 - 1.4 µm). P. bogotensis is also a tetraploid (2n = 36) with normal meiosis behaviour forming 18 bivalents. The size of its somatic chromosomes varies between 1 to 1.8 µm. The karyotype is composed by 14 m - sm and 4 st - t chromosomes. There is a terminal satellite in the short arm of a st - t chromosome. P. tetramera is an octoploid (n = 36) and its meiosis shows the formation of up to 5 quadrivalents. It has larger chromosomes than P. dioica, which belongs also to the same subgenus and section.
