- Abstract
In this reflection on the 40th volume of Management Learning I offer some thoughts about its special character. This, I suggest, consists in part in the provision of a forum for relatively unconventional work, including speculative essays. To create and sustain such a forum requires not only intellectual courage but also a willingness to confront the proliferation of ranking systems for journals, which tend to promote conformity. Given that the pressure of such systems is increasing, the 'thought leadership' that can come from less conventional writing is ever more difficult to sustain, and it is to the credit of the journal that it continues to provide a home for such work.
