- Title
Yarning together: toward targeted, co‐designed parenting programs for Aboriginal Australians.
- Authors
Sherriff, Simone; Gwynn, Josephine D
- Abstract
A scoping review published in the Medical Journal of Australia examined the participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander caregivers in parenting programs. The review found that fewer than 1% of participating parents in the reviewed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were Aboriginal, and only two studies investigated interventions specifically for Aboriginal families. None of the studies included consultation with Aboriginal participants during program development, and no information was provided on the involvement of Aboriginal fathers. The authors emphasized the need for targeted, co-designed, community-led programs that take into account Aboriginal child rearing practices and involve Aboriginal governance and leadership. Alternative study designs, such as stepped wedge randomized trials, should also be considered to increase engagement with Aboriginal communities.
