- Abstract
An essay on historian Patricia Nelson Limerick is presented, focusing on her contributions to the field of New Western History. It examines her trip to Madison, South Dakota in 1972 upon the invitation of history professor Gerald W. Lange. The author comments on Limerick's criticism of historian Frederick Jackson Turner and her book "The Legacy of Conquest: The Unbroken Past of the American West." Her treatments of themes of conquest, imperialism, and American exceptionalism are explored.
