- Abstract
This article discusses the discovery of the first recorded use of the term "gout" in a medical sense before AD 1000. The term "gout" originated from the Latin word "gutta," which was used in Medieval medicine to describe various arthritic manifestations. The article presents evidence from historical sources, including a biography of Saint Wiborada, which mentions the use of the term "gout" to describe the pain and swelling experienced by a monk suffering from the condition. This discovery suggests that gout was a recognized medical condition as early as the tenth century AD and highlights the importance of historical written sources in understanding the antiquity of rheumatological conditions.
