- Abstract
The subject of this study is the theoretical explanation of interpersonal sensitivity, the presentation of other psychological elements related to interpersonal sensitivity and the examination of related research. For this purpose, doctoral and master's theses in Türkiye, as well as other studies accessible in Türkiye and abroad, were examined. Thus, the factors affecting interpersonal sensitivity were revealed and studies aimed at decreasing interpersonal sensitivity were mentioned. Finally, it is aimed to make a holistic review study by developing solution suggestions against this condition affecting mental health. Many negative effects are associated with interpersonal sensitivity. In summary these are: beliefs on worthlessness and deficiency, a tendency to misinterpret other person's reactions wrongly and negatively, an exaggerated sense of anxiety on people's impressions, fear of rejection and criticism, and social anxiety and avoidance behavior developed as a consequence of these fears, an inability to be assertive in social situations and demonstrating avoidant behavior, efforts on being compatible to avoid rejection. This demonstrates that interpersonal sensitivity is a comprehensive feature which relates to cognitive, emotional, social and behavioral dimensions. For this reason, it relates to many other psychopathologies. Review of the scientific literature demonstrates that interpersonal sensitivity is related to social anxiety, loneliness, protective parental attitudes, attachment styles, low social and emotional intelligence, ineffective conflict resolution strategies, smart phone addiction, rejection sensitivity, depression, cognitive distortions, low self-esteem, low resilience, eating disorders, low uncertainty tolerance, a history of trauma, some chronic health conditions and mental health conditions. In addition to these, there are studies aimed at reducing interpersonal sensitivity. These studies emphasize group therapies that use a cognitive behavioral approach and demonstrate positive results. Therefore, a comprehensive review of these components is believed to be a valuable contribution to the scientific literature. This study can provide knowledge that can help enriching further academic studies on these components and intervention strategies.
