- Abstract
Despite the experience of the Constitutional Monarchy, the implementation of the multi-party system in the Republic of Turkey took time. After the World War II, which resulted in the victory of democratic governments, Turkey had to adopt a multi-party system with the effect of external impositions. In this process, a group in the Turkish press took an active role in the transition to a multi-party system and made great efforts to create a public opinion in this direction. In this process, Ahmet Emin Yalman and Zekeriya Sertel, who had their journalism education in the USA despite their different political tendencies, not only supported with their articles but also opened the pages of their newspapers to the founders of the Democrat Party and even actively participated in the founding of the party. The support given by the Turkish press to the transition to a multi-party system continued after the DP came to power in 1950, with improvements in the press legislation for the first time, and almost all the press, except the CHP's media organ Ulus, took a stand for the DP. However, this support did not last long, and since 1954, the press gradually began to withdraw its support from the DP and even switched to the opposition, due to the restrictions imposed by the DP on the press with the regulations made in the legislation, along with the paper shortage and the reactions to the advertisement distribution system. Ahmet Emin Yalman, who took an active role in its establishment, is at the forefront of the journalists who have made the most severe criticisms of the DP in recent years. In this article, which was prepared by scanning the press of the period and reviewing the relevant academic publications, the attitude of the press, especially Ahmet Emin Yalman's sharp change in attitude, during the transition to multiparty life and its establishment, as well as in the last periods of the DP, which resulted in its removal from power with a revolution, was emphasized.
