- Abstract
Maintaining peace in the ASEAN region is of utmost importance, and effective resolution of interstate problems is key to achieving this goal. While the focus during the Cold War was on fostering trust and preventing conflicts, the post-Cold War era has brought about new challenges, such as those stemming from ethnic and religious differences. These require a more sophisticated approach to conflict management that can address emerging regional and global issues. The adoption of the ASEAN Charter in 2008 has been a significant step in providing the association with a solid institutional and legal framework to achieve its primary objectives. The influence and presence of ASEAN in the East Asian geopolitical arena increased dramatically after the end of the Cold War. This was accomplished by including Indochina countries as members and establishing institutional ties with other states. Due to these changes, ASEAN nations now have more strategic flexibility to affect the larger Asian regional order. Comprehending the fundamental institutional principles and objectives of ASEAN is essential to grasp the potential and limitations of its institutional and strategic adaptations. Although there have been significant changes, ASEAN has preserved institutional integrity. This article seeks to conduct an objective assessment of ASEAN's ability to uphold regional peace and stability during and after the Cold War era, through its institutional and normative power. Moreover major security challenges and relations of ASEAN with powerful nations such as China and the US will also be discussed.
