- Title
Workplace e-mail and Internet use: employees and employers beware.
- Authors
Muhl, Charles J.
- Abstract
The article examines how law related to internet use has interpreted employers' and employees' rights and risks with respect to its use at the workplace. It begins with a discussion of whether the law recognizes any right to privacy for employees in the e-mail they send and the Web sites they view at work. An employee's personal use of an employer's e-mail system and of internet access is not protected under the law. Employers can face legal liability for employees' inappropriate use. An extensive survey of employers and employees to gauge their opinions on internet and e-mail use at the workplace revealed that the groups view non-work-related use of the internet and e-mail as appropriate. More than 87 percent of employees surveyed stated that it was appropriate for them to surf non-work-related websites for at least some portion of the workday.
