- Abstract
This essay relates current debates in the social sciences on international labour migration, ethnicity and migrant organisation with amateur sport. It looks at self-organisations of South American men and women in Seville (Spain) in the realm of football. This approach explicitly locates a sportrelated phenomenon within the wider context of migrants' life and labour. Moreover, a multidimensional approach to ethnicity captures complex and even contradictory processes of "ethnisation" and "de-ethnisation". By addressing football leagues as migrant associations and looking at their collective agency, I highlight discrepancies between their practical engagement with neighbourhood sports clubs, and the lack of official recognition and participatory channels offered to them. The paper argues that this is because of their public image as "ethnic" associations. An ethnographic approach is essential to move beyond the analysis of "front-stage" sporting events where national and regional identities are played out, and identify and understand social processes and negotiation behind the scene.
